Kniphofia Plants. These fascinating perennials have spikes of two-toned flowers that look as if they were on fire. The two-toned effect is a result of uneven blooming of the tube-like florets along the spike: The bottom flowers turn yellow and start to wither before the top flowers are finished blooming.

So my favorite all time perennial is the beautiful Red Hot Poker plant... from the first time i saw this plant I am always looking to add more to my yard and learn more about it.
It seems as if there are two varieties that i have come upon that i have in my yard -- one is a spring/early summer bloomer and the other is a later summer bloomer.
I love the latter so much more.. that thing just blooms and blooms all summer but i have yet to find any more of these at nurseries in my area. I would like to try to grow some more
of these from seed... can anyone please provide some direction on how i can do this with this plant? It is rather large at this time so i could possibly split it ( that is possible, right?)
but i really rather not.
Any insight on the seedlings, etc would be much appreciated.

Preferred growing conditions: Red Hot Pokers thrive in a wide range of soils including clay. Plant them in full sun. Mulch with common mulching materials in arid climates. Not a blowtorch, but close. Spikes glow, blaze open fiery red, then pale and wither. Mixture contains colors not usually available. Use as accents with grasses or sprawling blues and purples. Spice up your hypercums, heleniums and gaillardias. The classic showpiece. GARDEN HINTS: Seeds may be started indoors about 6 weeks before outdoor planting time. In cold areas, protect over winter with a layer of straw mulch. Cultivate or mulch to control weeds.
